“Before we begin, we ask God to direct our thinking, especially asking that it be divorced from self-pity, dishonest or self-seeking motives.” (Page 86, Big Book)
Imagine a dial from 0 (ego-directedness) to 100 (God-directedness).
Each day I turn the dial to 100, and, as the day proceeds, it ticks and sometimes lurches back towards 0. When I get up the next day, it might be down at 87, 47 or 4. I might have topped it up a little in the meantime. But I can reset it all the way back to 100 whenever I want. Ego-directedness is the default. God-directedness needs constant manual adjustment. Ego-directedness is being slumped. God-directedness is gymnastic, balletic.
