Pointing the finger back in

“One of our delusions is that we, as spouses of alcoholics, are ‘running the show.’” (ODAT, 23 September)

What is the show? The whole kit and kaboodle of life.

This is not for me to run.

What is for me to run?

My own attitude and action.

That’s the real show to run.

“If we stop fighting out every incident that happens, absence of an active adversary is bound to bring about wholesome changes in the home environment and everyone in it.” (ODAT, 3 September)

Having an active adversary out there is my way, as an Al-Anon, of resolving the internal conflict. If the enemy is out there, I become, once more, an integrated individual. Anything I like remains within. Anything I dislike, reject, and deny is placed out there. When I stop projecting and realise that what I’m seeing out there is actually inside, which is where it needs to be dealt with, I can get down to business.
