Vain and unprofitable

“It is a vain and unprofitable thing to conceive either grief or joy for future things which perhaps will never come about.” (ODAT, 11 July)

Being unhappy about the future does not pay down the debt in advance.

What does work is to accept the thing as though it’s already happened and decide to be cheerful anyway.

Write off every debt as it’s in the offing.

Then its resolution is a wonderful bonus.
