Inside not outside

“If we really do want peace of mind, the first thing to realize is that it does not depend on conditions outside us, but those inside us.” (ODAT, 3 June)

I cause every single disturbance I experience.

Such causes are a response to external stimuli.

The stimulus cannot cause the disturbance without my participation.

Identify and eliminate that participation, and the disturbance goes.

Peace of mind is what is left when disturbance is eliminated.

The opposite of participation is detachment.

The answer is therefore detachment.
