Leave and guard

“I will leave to Him whatever action is to be taken, and guard against interfering with the working out of His plan for us.” (ODAT, 7 April)

Take the action, and the results are in God’s hands.

Keep it in the day, and the future is in God’s hands.

Make amends, and the reaction is in God’s hands.

Leave the alcoholic to his own devices, and the outcome is in God’s hands.

What does playing God look like in Al-Anon?

Putting myself in charge of the alcoholic and the course of the alcoholic’s condition.

How do I know I’m doing that?

I’m thinking about him.

I’m talking about him.

I’m monitoring, planning, plotting, scheming, strategising, seeking counsel from others, posting online about him, explaining carefully to others what he’s up to, what is going on.

I’ve made him my business.

The other day, an alcoholic rolled the ball towards me, hoping I would pick it up, and throw it back.

That would have been, ‘Game On!’

I just let it sit there.

Not my ball.
