'Old-fashioned' sounds bad. 'Modern' sounds good.
The passage of time does not normally produce improvement. Quite the reverse. Whatever is born or created starts to deteriorate immediately. The sun, the solar system, the galaxy, the universe are winding down. Forward means down, not up. Entropy means that time and the material world have a definite direction, and the destination is not crowning glory but nothingness.
Progress therefore requires not change for change's sake, increased complexity for complexity's sake, ever-greater proliferation of tailorings, modifications, and adaptations, information for information's sake, but reinvigoration, re-introduction of spirit, return to the original source for more inspiration, grouting, pointing, shoring up, reinforcing, pruning, training, and constant recommitment to founding principles. The truth, the origin, does not become worn out, outdated, tired, superseded, fuddy-duddy, musty, or obsolete. Those are the fates of the derivations, the deviations, the compromises, the heresies, the apostasies.
At the end of the day, AA's continuing success lies in its simple adherence to the original founding principles of admission of powerlessness, surrender to God, moral inventory, confession, amends, and the humble performance of God's will.
