There are two sources of guilt.
The first is the conscience, which pricks me when I do ill.
The second is my ego, which, when I abjure its precepts and reject its plotted course towards self-aggrandisement, fires arrows of guilt at me.
The fact of feeling guilt is not a sign I am doing something wrong.
Its absence is not a sign I am doing something right (for there are ways of temporarily masking rightful guilt's signals).
What is required is an assessment of my conduct in the light of asking God for God's will, then testing the answers against the authoritative body of writings, precepts, and wisdom of God's men and women down the ages.
