Thirty years ago or so, I went into a Christian bookshop in Battersea, spoiling for a fight. I gradually edged towards a confrontation, but the lady behind the counter, once she twigged what I was up to, said:
This conversation is not to the grace of God. We are closed.
I was once subtly recalcitrant in a job interview. I was escorted from the building.
No one is obliged to remain in my company; no one is obliged to remain in a relationship with me.
Likewise, I am not obliged to remain in anyone's company; I am not obliged to remain in a relationship with anyone.
Each setting in the world has its code of conduct, written or unspoken. Breach that, and there will be consequences.
One major feature of alcoholism is the delusion that my actions have no consequences. They do.
