The Big Book asks us to formulate, with God, a sane and sound ideal.
One way of doing this is, at Step Seven, to write a general sane and sound ideal, a statement of commitment, about one's AA life, specifically how one is intending to go about Steps Eight through Twelve, indicating time to be put in, activities to be carried out, and timescales for completion. Be specific.
There is then a yardstick to measure one's own compliance.
It is also one's own God-prompted ideal one is measuring one's conduct against. Letting oneself down is quite a different matter than failing to comply with someone else's instructions.
