Many tributaries, one river; many rafts, one journey

There are many fellowships, but they all lead, by half-way through Step One, to one programme.

Within AA, there are many rafts: ordinary AA (my tributary), Big Book Awakening, Big Book Step Study, Back to Basics, Primary Purpose, Big Book Muckers, and, I suppose, others.

But there's only one river. Many tributaries; many rafts.

No tributary is better than any other. But pick the one that's nearest to you. It will save you time.

Pick the raft that appeals.

But it's the power of the water that carries you down the river.

The raft has no power of its own.

People can get very defensive about their tributaries and about their rafts. I can, too. Defensiveness always brings aggressiveness and attack. The rafts are very very small, and the river is very very big, and it knows what it is doing. It is not even aware of the rafts. To the river, the rafts are twigs.
