Christmas trees and ornaments

The Big Book, between pages 63 and 88, provides 26 pages' worth of very specific instructions on Steps Three through Eleven. Before that, there is a clear paradigm for Steps One and Two, albeit discussed more expansively over a few chapters. Step Twelve is also discussed at length, having, as it does, several aspects.

The AA programme, = the Big Book up to page 164: practical and all-purpose. This is like the Christmas Tree: the basic structure for the process. The detail—the ornaments—can be provided by the remainder of the literature, whether AA, Al-Anon, OA, etc.

Without the basic structure of a set of actions to take, the detail can get very messy, like a bunch of Christmas baubles in a box. Without the decorations, the Christmas Tree is a bit bare.

Alternatively, think of the Twelve Steps per the Big Book as a mirror. If an alcoholic looks in the mirror, they will see an alcoholic; if an anon looks in the mirror, they will see an anon.
