Considerations for the f*#&ed

Some things to consider if you're f*#&ed in the head:

When I'm f*#&ed in the head, my thinker is broken, so the job is not to think.

I'm gonna have to act, not think, my way out of it.

How? Daily programme, as advised by a sponsor.

All resentments and fears are wrong-headed under any circumstances.

All perceptions, interpretations, and assessments are false under these particular circumstances.

The demon possessor (the ego) uses facts to produce lies, so the accuracy of 'facts' is irrelevant.

How do you not think?

You occupy the mind to keep the enemy out.

Programme, service, activities, usefulness, fun stuff, meetings, tapes, books, the radio, anything, plus, and this is really important, blocking prayers.

Sit inside the safe fortress and refuge of God by voicing prayers that express God's love, protection, and power. Voice them constantly, in your mind, out loud, and to others.

The bad thoughts—i.e. all thoughts that are not 100% practical or relating to God's love and protection, any thoughts that are not bright, glowing, and hopeful—are like rogue orcs roaming the plains: the disgusting, stinking f*#&ers can get you only if you abandon the castle and mingle with them. From within the castle, you can hear their cries, but you are safe.

These thoughts: Do not listen to them. Do not voice them. Do not write them down. Do not share about them. Share about the fact of them, but not their content. Do not become their megaphone. Do not give them oxygen. Do not amplify them. Do not play with them. Do not argue with them. Do not try to rationalise your way out of them. Do not let them voice themselves in your mind. Instead voice a prayer. Learn a long one so you don't get too bored. Say the prayer out loud, repeatedly, rhythmically, and even sung. But do not let the enemy voice its words in your mind. Do not act as the enemy's propagandist. Do not respond to people offering you solutions with worries, reservations, fears, concerns, or other shows of lack of confidence. Don't work for the enemy whilst trying to save your own life. When you're detoxed, you can work the middle steps on them, but not yet.

People say this is tough. But so are relapse and suicide, so pick a side. If you're like me, this is a life-and-death matter.

If a person has not learned to control what thoughts run through their mind, it's going to take a while to learn how to do this effectively, but that's the price of being sloppy for decades.

I once vented my ego thoughts to Jonathan, and he said, gesturing generally in my direction, 'That ... has to stop: if you permit it, it will take over.' If you've permitted it for decades, you've got your work cut out, but you have to start somewhere, and, if not now, when? You think it will get easier if you wait till you feel better? Wrong. You won't feel better until you get a grip of what tapes you permit to play in your mind. There is no time but now.

The thoughts are still going to come thick and fast, but, if you substitute, block, and divert for long enough, eventually they start to calm down, and you'll hear a loud noise as your head is extracted from your behind.

***

If you want a prayer, here's one (Psalm 91). The images of dangers all represent ego thoughts.

He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.
He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.
Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;
Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.
A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.
Only with thine eyes shalt thou behold and see the reward of the wicked.
Because thou hast made the Lord, which is my refuge, even the most High, thy habitation;
There shall no evil befall thee, neither shall any plague come nigh thy dwelling.
For he shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee in all thy ways.
They shall bear thee up in their hands, lest thou dash thy foot against a stone.
Thou shalt tread upon the lion and adder: the young lion and the dragon shalt thou trample under feet.
Because he hath set his love upon me, therefore will I deliver him: I will set him on high, because he hath known my name.
He shall call upon me, and I will answer him: I will be with him in trouble; I will deliver him, and honour him.
With long life will I satisfy him, and shew him my salvation.

Emmet Fox writes well on how to apply this.
