Sometimes the ego is really fudging strong. It assails a person from every angle with intrusive, murderous, suicidal, anxious, and other thoughts. When this strikes, and usual measures fail, here's the MO:
Yeah, do a tiny bit of inventory, talk through the situation(s) with a couple of grown-ups, establish corrective measures (attitudes + actions: a concrete plan), THEN:
FILL THE MIND IN EVERY SPARE MOMENT WITH EXTERNAL STUFF THAT RAISES THE CONSCIOUSNESS TO A HIGHER LEVEL (praying your arse off, memorising prayers that are about God and His power and saying them over and over again, attending 100,000 AA or Al-Anon meetings, service, sponsees, talking to newcomers, doing housework, vigorous exercise, watching The Golden Girls, listening to Earl Purdy ACIM classes, yoga, Yoga with Adriene, listening to Ken Wapnick ACIM recordings, listening to AA or Al-Anon tapes, listening to audiobooks or lecture series, listening to Radio 3, listening to Radio 4, listening to classical music, listening to meditation tracks on Insight Timer, learning Japanese, learning the lyrics to all of the songs from A Little Night Music, listening to AA or Al-Anon literature or Emmet Fox or ACIM as audio recordings, listening to Big Book workshops, reading spiritual books, playing with dogs, watching all of the Harry Potter films in order, watching all seven seasons of Buffy in order) ...
Basically anything other than thinking about oneself and one's problem. To heal, the sick bit of the brain needs to be left well alone. LEAVE IT ALONE. STOP FRETTING AT IT, THINKING ABOUT IT, AND TALKING ABOUT IT.
This may take hours, days, weeks, or months. At some point the ego effs off and finds someone else to bother and you can rest. If you don't give in, it will ... eventually.
[Technically, this is partly detoxing and, over the longer term, allowing the brain to literally rewire its pathways. It knows what it is doing. Let it.]
