To manage a life means to manage my schedule and actions. If I'm powerless over the first drink and over subsequent drinks, I'm not in charge of my schedule or my actions: the impulse to drink and the compulsion to continue to drinking are in charge. I'm not managing my life; they are. This gives rise to adverse consequences.
