Abandonment issues

It's common to talk about abandonment.

Infants and children, people who require care, or others in a bond of obligation (e.g. soldiers in a battalion) can be abandoned, respectively, by parents, carers, or comrades in arms.

However, if there is no obligation, there is no abandonment.

As an adult, I cannot be abandoned, because no one owes me anything. Even if my husband were to leave, that is entirely his right, and he would not be abandoning me. He would be leaving me. He is under no obligation to stay. I am not his infant, dependent, or comrade in arms.
