Actually, it does work, but it doesn't do what people think it does.
Self-care (my pages 84 to 88 routine, talking to a sponsor or other advisors, getting some rest, taking a step back, exercise, good diet, etc.) does not make me happy and does not make me satisfied.
Rather, it is the prerequisite for taking the actions that make me happy and satisfied, which essentially consist in getting involved in the world in the constructive, selfless way God envisages for me.
