Resentment is insanity

This is how resentment works:

- Find someone to attack
- Attack them
- Look for evidence to support the attack
- Discount all contrary evidence

This is insane.

Resentment is predicated on judgement.

Sound judgement involves the following stages:

- Gather all past, present, and future facts in the universe directly or indirectly related to the situation
- Assemble these into a picture ('what is')
- Select criteria for assessment ('what should be')
- Judge based on the gap between the two.

However:

- The fact-base is deficient and defective
- The facts are too numerous and complex to assemble into a picture
- How do you know you've selected the right criteria for assessment?
- The judgement is even more complex than the assembly of the picture, hence impossible

To get through the day and navigate the world, exercising a certain amount of discernment is necessary, and we have to proceed based on the best view we can come to of what is going on. But this is a rough-and-ready expedient.

The practical aspect is also beside the point: the fuel behind resentment originates in the desire to make someone else wrong (and us right), not in the external circumstance onto which it is projected.

Whether I'm acting as an armchair expert on a technical issue in science, technology, or commerce or an armchair executioner of a person who I barely know but has committed some infraction, I'm proceeding on the basis of relative ignorance, whatever my protestations to the contrary.

Resentment is always insane, and always balks at this observation.
