The Preamble

Word has it that the Preamble has changed. What does that mean?

It means that the wording of a piece of Conference-Approved Literature (CAL) has changed.

What is Conference-Approved Literature? It is a piece of writing approved by the General Service Conference as reflecting the position taken by the fellowship of AA as a whole.

Why does it exist? AA groups find it helpful to use CAL rather than writing their own materials. If you want something that has the AA seal of approval, use CAL.

Does that mean it has to be used? No.

Does that mean nothing else can be used? No.

Conference Approval does not mean that everything that is not Conference-Approved is 'conference-disapproved' or 'conference-unapproved'.

No group is obliged to do anything in an AA meeting or to use any particular piece of literature. If it uses that literature, it can use as it wishes. It can change or adapt the wording to its heart's content. The only provisos are that it not affect other groups (hard to do) or AA as a whole (super hard to do), stick to its primary purpose of carrying the message to other alcoholics, and not actually or by implication affiliate with, endorse, or express an opinion on any other organisation, enterprise, philosophy, religion, politics, etc.

So, for a group to reword the preamble as it wishes, there is no need to go to Conference. All you need is a pen, a piece of paper, and a Group Conscience Meeting.

Likewise, if a group does not like the new preamble, all it needs to do is not lose its copy of the old one.

You could start off a meeting by singing arias from Madame Butterfly for all AA cares.
