Finite code for infinite spiritual growth

The programme of AA (set out largely in the book Alcoholics Anonymous up to page 164) is a finite code that provides the framework for an infinite set of circumstances and situations, like an alphabet that is suitable for whatever you want to communicate verbally or a musical notation system that can be used to write any piece of music. It does not need to be revised just because time has elapsed or some things in the world are different. We do not need new letters of the alphabet or new notes. It's not about the code, the letters, or the notes. It's about what you do with them. Indeed, each element of the programme has infinite facets. There are many lines that simply cannot be exhausted: the material about the spiritual awakening (page 25), the notion of keeping your head in the clouds with God and your feet on earth (page 130), and spiritual enlargement through work and self-sacrifice for others (page 14). These three ideas alone provide a sufficient framework for endlessly varying and interesting experiences. The programme is not limited. If it feels limited, the problem is lack of imagination not poverty of raw material.
