CONCEPT XI (SPIRITUAL IDEAS)

Short form: The trustees should always have the best possible committees, corporate service directors, executives, staffs, and consultants. Composition, qualifications, induction procedures, and rights and duties will always be matters of serious concern.
  • When service needs to be delegated, find the best person available, examining:
    • Skills.
    • Experience.
    • Performance record.
    • Potential.
    • Temperament.
    • Willingness.
    • Availability.
  • When service is offered to me, I can consider:
    • Whether others might also be offered the opportunity.
    • Whether others might not be more suitable.
    • This is often the case with sponsorship.
  • When there is to be an election:
    • Draw up and circulate a job description.
    • Advertise widely.
    • Encourage the submission of service CVs in advance for distribution to the decision-making committee.
    • Have the candidates present their service histories at the meeting of the decision-making committee.
    • Encourage questions and answers in both directions.
    • Conduct anonymous voting to enable honest voting.
  • Incoming service members are to be provided with all support in terms of:
    • Prior experience (preferably written down).
    • Ongoing support.
  • Outgoing service members should be encouraged:
    • To write down their experience for future service members.
    • To provide ongoing support.
  • Rights and duties should be recorded:
    • Roles should have job descriptions.
    • Committees should have terms of reference (setting out the what, where, when, who, why, and how of the committee's work).
    • Both job descriptions and terms of reference should be regularly revised.
    • See Concept X more generally for details of the scope of authority and responsibility.
    • When people are hired for their professional skills, they should be paid at market rates.
  • Perform oversight of employees or officers (Concepts VII and VIII).
  • Be willing to conduct fair processes to discharge or remove them if oversight fails to bring about the necessary improvement.
