Upset during amends

“It should not matter, however, if someone does throw us out of his office. We have made our demonstration, done our part. It’s water over the dam.” (Page 78, Big Book)

“9. Made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.” (Page 59, Big Book)

If someone gets upset during an amend, the amend did not cause it. They are upset because of the harm done and the time it has taken to get around to making amends for it. The amend is the remedy. An amend should therefore not be avoided because one anticipates negative emotion on the part of the other person. If there is negative emotion, that does not retroactively recast the amend as incorrectly made.

Necessary surgery causes pain, but no one would say that the surgery is causing more harm. Pain and harm are overlapping but distinct.
