Pride, in this context, is concern with others’ view of one.
The part of one’s mind preoccupied with such matters can’t be retrained. It’s like an errant child on the bus. We don’t let it drive the bus. We don’t feed it, either, or it grows to fill the bus. Its obsessions must be dismissed as folly. Instead, keep the eye on the road.
