If things weren’t hard to do, willpower wouldn’t be needed. Willpower is therefore a necessary faculty, and difficulty is built into the system.
There’s nothing wrong with having a horse, or the horse going fast. To get anywhere, you need a horse, and a fast horse will get you there quicker. If you end up in the wrong place, it’s not because you have a horse or the horse goes fast. It’s because it’s been pointed in the wrong direction. Just so with the will. Without a will, nothing can be done. The job is to point will in the direction of God’s will.
