Obligation

“Make it plain he is under no obligation to you, that you hope only that he will try to help other alcoholics when he escapes his own difficulties.” (Page 94, Big Book)

If I sponsor someone, they owe me nothing. When the phone call is over, they are no longer my sponsee. When the phone rings, and it’s them, I’m sponsoring them again. Sponsorship is not a relationship but an activity that does not persist beyond the bounds of the activity. For the activity to be maximally effective, in a sense there must NOT be a relationship. A relationship will have certain features—habit, affinity, loyalty—and these give rise to obligation.
