Infinite regress

“The trouble is that this kind of thinking takes no real account of the facts.” (Page 36, Twelve Steps and Twelve Traditions)

When something happens, and I think about it, I’m thinking about the thing.

The next time I think about it, I’m thinking about my previous thinking about it. I’m no longer thinking about the thing itself. I’m not accessing new data. I’m reworking the previous analysis of the data.

The third time, I’m thinking about what I thought about what I thought.

This regress is infinite.

If I’m thinking about something from forty years ago, I’m not.

I’m thinking about thoughts.

No wonder one goes quite mad with all such thinking: I am divorced from the facts.
