“and his lips that they speak no guile” (ODAT, 26 February)
One of the slowest lessons to learn is the ability to say what I think about something (when it’s appropriate to say anything at all), ‘without guile’.
One does try to be factual, neutral, polite, and brief.
But sometimes one has nonetheless to say things that will be difficult for the other person to hear. One might have to state a disagreement, correct an error, voice a criticism, or refuse a request.
I’m finding it’s better to just come out and say it, rather than trying to soft-pedal or soft-soap it.
Pussy-footing around the subject aggravates and patronises people and only puts off the inevitable shock.
Rip, don’t tease, the plaster off.
