“Why should I react to criticism and accusation, justified or not? What can I gain by heated denials and irrational discussions? In a neurotic environment, anything can start a row. I need not take part in it; I will ignore it—cheerfully if I can.” (ODAT, 7 July)
I can’t change other people’s views by trying to change their views.
I can’t even explain anything to anyone.
If they don’t understand it already, they won’t understand the explanation.
Tell. And they can figure it out in time, if they want to and are able.
A man tried to explain to a stranger that he, the stranger, had a banana in his ear.
The stranger said, “I’m sorry. I can’t hear you. I have a banana in my ear.”
The best answer to everything is just, “Yes”.
When I’m criticised or accused, if they’re right, I can fix it.
If they’re not, I can pass it over.
I’ve got more important things to get on with.
