Contentment

“The contented, well-adjusted person has no need to look for flaws in others.” (ODAT, 1 April)

There is enough to change in me. There are enough tasks that have not been performed. There are enough obligations that have not been fulfilled.

If I’m not looking at others, thinking about others, I cannot see their flaws.

I need think about others only to consider how to fulfil my obligations towards them, if there are any.

Let it begin with me, Al-Anon instructs.

Quite so!

First of all, decide to be contented—not miserable—and ask God how I can look at the world to bring this about.

Then decide to be well-adjusted—adjusted well to reality—and ask God how I can look at the world to bring this about.

Then say, “Now we’ve got that out of the way, what shall we, You, God, and I, do today?”
