If a person can believe that there is wisdom and strength that (a) lies beyond themselves and (b) can be acquired, they can believe in a power greater than themselves.
When people in recovery refer to a Higher Power or God, that's essentially what is meant.
This form of belief is barred only to those who believe themselves to be the only source of wisdom and strength in their lives.
