Why must we be thorough?
The surgeon, in cleaning out a wound, removes all foreign bodies.
Foreign bodies cause pathological reactions in the body.
The defects and unmade amends are foreign bodies.
They do not belong.
That's why we feel bad about them.
We're having diseased reactions to what does not belong.
