Bang bang

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, I was in a meeting where someone started to tell a harrowing story about an unpleasant experience. It was lurid and involved the death of another person. It was a story that had been told several times before in that group. Some members interrupted and pointed out that the story was affecting them badly and politely asked that the sharer change the topic. The storyteller then criticised the people for 'cross-sharing' and told the group that these people were sick. The tables were turned, and recounting of personal distress was instantly converted into attack.

Meetings are not venues for venting, dumping, bullying, or (re-)traumatising others, especially when they ask you to stop. They're venues for politely sharing our experience, strength, and hope. We must be considerate of others and of the primary purpose of the group. Other content can be kept for one-to-one discussion.
